How to permanently change default font in Word

The default font in Word 2016, 2013 & 2010 when a new word document is opened is Calibri. If you want to change the font for the current document then you can use the drop down available as part of the Font section. But if you want to set as the default font for all the new documents then you can do this in more than one way.

This can be done either by changing the font in Normal template but the easiest one is by using the Change Styles option.

To permanently change the default font in Word, navigate to styles section and click the Change Styles drop down and select Fonts option from the menu option.

Now select your desired Font either from the Built-in fonts or by creating new themes fonts.

After selecting the font click the Set as Default available as part of Change Styles menu option. This would set the font as the default one when you create a new document.

I have tried 2,748 versions of the prescription to get the font permanently changed (maybe a little exaggeration on number of times). Word always comes up with Calbri as the default font.
I also looked at the history of the Normal.dotm files — the one shows last Modified April 8, 2011
This is the fourth time that I have given serious time and effort to the problem.
My final thought on the problem is something like *(&*$^$)_&*#$@#$$@#
There is always the possibility that I have been “snake bit”.

  3. Thanks, Robert – I thought it was just me stuck forever with the Calibri font. I’ve tried it all – now, I just prepare a blank document and load it up. Astonishing that the Options menu does not give you the chance to set the default font.

    Robert, Don,

Can you check whether the problem could be with add-ins or the normal template?

I am so sick of Calibri. I even removed the font from the fonts folder. I have everything I can find set on Georgia and when composing a message, Outlook seizes any opportunity to reset what it prints as Calibri 11, which I find difficult in the extreme to read. Outlook will switch to Calibri on occasion if I add a blank line between paragraphs. Outlook will show received messages in Calibri. Calibri SUCKS. How can I kill it dead? I don’t want it on ANY pane, I don’t want it on outgoing or incoming emails, and I don’t want Outlook making default choices for me. I want Calibri finished. That thing has more lives than Dracula. Put a stake through its heart. Get Buffy the Vampire Slayer to show how to do it, but do it!

  6. You are not alone. I seriously resent being given document defaults that I cannot change. I’ve invested many hours trying to change this and am thoroughly sick of it. I don’t like Calibri, the size, or the spacing. Every time I have to spend time and effort to change those things in a new Word document, I get angry all over again. Maybe there is some technical reason for MS to set defaults, but not knowing if this is true, it just strikes me as pure arrogance. It feels the same as somebody insisting that I paint all the walls in my house a certain color.

  7. I AGREE, AND CAN NOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO CHANGE THE DEFAULT SETTINGS EITHER.

I realize Microsoft probably doesn’t care that Word only defaults to Calibri, but why doesn’t Microsoft give THE CUSTOMER what the customer wants. I have wasted hours trying to change the default font. Calibri is the ugliest font anyone could have come up with.

  9. For me the whole MS Office 2010 is a fiasco. First when you open any of the applications the screen screams to you in confusion because is “too busy”. I have been using MS Office Professional since came out the first time and to my taste was used friendly, you just needed to know the program and where everything was with no problem you will do the changes as you pleased – “Options” was your key. Now Office 2010 is driving me nuts and as Diana said this font Calibri 11 at 1.5 spacing it is like is somebody impose me to paint my house in the color they want. This program feels now like the failure of Microsoft with ME and Vista. Does not matter what Microsoft indicates in its forums, how to do, etc. so far nothing has worked out for me.

  10. I also am extremely tired of trying to permanently change the font in Word 2010. Why can’t Microsoft correct this problem? I spend far too much time changing the font from Calibri to the font I want.

How can I change the Microsoft Word default from Calibri to Verdana?

  12. Georgia is wonderful font: Not only you can read clearly the difference between 1, I and l, bot also places the number a bit lower and makes chemical formulae easy to read, like Na2SO4.
There was a perfect word-edit program, was called WordPerfect……

  13. If you have PDF Complete installed, uninstall and then reset your default. Worked for me.
