Autocorrect in Word – Replace text as you type

Autocorrect in Microsoft Word 2016, Word 2013, 2010 and 2007 has a feature called replace any text as you type. This tutorial provides an example for replacing text with text and image in Word document.

In Word 2013 and Word 2010 you can access Proofing section by clicking File menu –> Options. To access AutoCorrect option in Word 2007 click on the Word Options and navigate to Proofing section.

And on clicking the AutoCorrect Options the following dialog box would be displayed. Under Replace text as you type, you can add the text which needs to be replaced it is typed in the Word Document.

For example if you want dato be replaced with Digital Answers in word document, then add da to the left hand side and Digital Answers to right hand side then click Add button.

How to use autocorrect for replacing text with picture

Step 1: Navigate to Insert menu, click Pictures under illustrations section

Step 2: Using the Insert Picture dialog, select and add image to the document.

Step 3: Click File menu, select Options from the menu list.

Step 4: In Word Option window, navigate to Proofing section and click AutoCorrect Options.

Step 5: Now enter the name under Replace text and make sure Formatted Text radio option is selected. (If you have not selected any image then this option will not be displayed)

Step 6: Click Add button to add the entry to AutoCorrect list. Then OK button on the AutoCorrect and Word Options to close the windows.

Now whenever you type the replace text, it will be automatically replaced with the image. If you are frequently going to insert company logo or your signature then you try this feature.

Turn off automatically created border lines in Word

Word 2016, 2013 and 2010 have a feature that allows users to automatically create border lines by just typing the character three times. For example if you type dash (-) three times and press enter key in a document, Word will automatically draw a border line with dash character. This is useful when your want to quickly draw border lines in your document.

Word application allows also users to turn off this feature using the Proofing options. Click the File menu then Options link. In Word Options window, click AutoCorrect options button under Proofing tab.

Then in the AutoCorrect window, navigate to Apply as you type section under AutoFormat As You Type tab. Now un mark the check box with label as Border lines. Click Ok button to confirm and save the changes.

Quickly turn off border line feature

You can quickly turn off border line feature using the AutoCorrect Context menu Options. Type the character 3 times and press enter to draw the border line. Now select “Stop Automatically Creating Border lines” option from the drop down list.

If you want to temporarily stop creating border line just for one or two occurrences then you press Ctrl + Z to undo the changes.

Turn off display of hyperlinks in Outlook 2013 & Outlook 2010 messages

Outlook 2013 & Outlook 2010 by default displays any Internet address as hyperlinks. This is pretty useful feature and by clicking the hyperlink would quickly launch the website. But if you want to disable this feature while reading as well as composing mail, then you turn off this feature using Editor Options.

Click the File menu –> Options link then navigate to Mail Options.

Click the Editor Options button available under the Compose messages section. In the Editor Options window, click the AutoCorrect Options button available under the Proofing section.

In the AutoCorrect Window, navigate to Replace section under AutoFormat tab and un tick the check box with label as Internet and network paths with hyperlinks.

Turn off auto replace of hyphens with dashes in Word 2010

AutoCorrect in Word 2010 has a feature which automatically converts two consecutive hyphens in em dash (__). For example when you have words connected with hyphens like June—December (with two hyphens) will be changed to June—December (with em dashes). This feature is by default enabled on Microsoft Word 2010.

Users can turn off the auto replacement of hyphens with dashes using the option available as part of AutoCorrect settings. Click the File menu –> Options link and navigate to Proofing Option screen then click the AutoCorrect Options button in the Proofing screen.

In the AutoCorrect window, click the AuoFormat As You Type tab and navigate to Replace as you type section.

Now unmark the check box with label as Hyphens (–) with dash (—) and click OK button to confirm and save the changes.

How to turn off ordinals with superscript in Word 2010

Microsoft Word 2010 has a feature that automatically replaces ordinals with superscript. But if you do not want this feature then you can turn off using the option provided as part of AutoCorrect settings.

Click the File menu then options link. In the Word Options window, navigate to Proofing section and click the AutoCorrect Options button.

Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab in AutoCorrect window and navigate to Replace as you type section. Now to disable ordinals with superscript feature, un mark the check box with label as Ordinals (1st) with superscript and then click Ok button to confirm and save the changes.
