How to add background color to paragraph in Word

In this short tutorial we are going to see how to add background color to texts or paragraph in Word 2016, Word 2013 and Word 2010. For example, if you want to add background color to a paragraph then you can follow the below mentioned steps.

  • Select the paragraph and navigate to Paragraph section under Home menu.

  • Click the arrow pointing downwards with paint icon.

  • Now pick the desired color under Theme Colors or Standard Colors. You could immediately see the preview of the color shading effect for the selected Paragraph.
  • If you want to add background shading with custom color then click More Colors option and define your colors under Custom tab.

Apply single or double strikethrough in Word

Apply single/double strikethrough in Word 2010, 2013 & 2016

Microsoft Word allows users to apply strikethrough and double strikethrough using the options available as part of Font dialog.

For example if you want apply strikethrough for a paragraph in word document then you can do the following

  • Select the paragraph and press Ctrl + D on the keyboard or click the option handle available as part of Font section under Home menu.
  • This should launch the following Font dialog box

Font Effects

  • Now navigate to Effects section and mark the check box with label as Double strikethrough. Click OK to confirm and save the changes.
  • This would apply the Double strikethrough to the selected paragraph.

Find out character count Microsoft Word document

Microsoft Word users can find out character count of a document using the option available as part of the Review menu.

Click the review menu and navigate to Proofing section then click the Word Count option.

This should display the following Word Count Statistics along with Characters (no spaces) and Character (with spaces) details. If you are interested to find out only the Characters Count of certain paragraph then all you need to do is Select the Paragraph before clicking the Word Count option.

If you only want to see the number of words in the document then the quickest way to do this is by checking the Status bar.

The status bar in Word 2013 would by default display the Word Count and in case if it not displayed then right click on the Status bar and choose the Word Count in Customize Status Bar menu list.
