Add line numbers in Word 2013, Word 2010 and Word 2007

Microsoft Word users can add line numbers to a word document using the options available as part of Page Layout menu. In this tutorial we will see the steps for adding line number in Word 2013 and Word 2011 for Mac.

Word 2010 allows users to add line numbers to a word document. This can be done using the Page Layout menu option. For example if you have the following text in your document and you want insert line numbers for each line then you use this feature.

To add line numbers for above paragraph, from Home menu click the Page Layout menu option and then navigate to Page Setup section.

In the Page Layout section, click the drop down arrow next to Line Numbers menu option. This would display the following menu options.

Now select Continuous from the list available menus and this would insert the line numbers in the Word document as shown below

The other line numbers options includes

  • Restart Each Page – To restart line numbers after each page.
  • Restart Each Section – To restart line numbers after each section.
  • Suppress for Current Paragraph – to remove line numbers for the selected paragraph.

Word 2011 for Mac

Step 1: Open the document for which you want to add line number.

Step 2: Click Layout menu and navigate to Text Layout section.

Step 3: Now click the Line Numbers option under Text Layout. This should display the following drop down list.

Step 4: Select Continuous from the Line numbers drop down list to add line numbers. You can also customise Line numbers by use other options in the list.

If you are looking for advanced line number options then click More Line Numbering.

Display of line number in status bar

If you just want to find out the current line number while editing a document then you can use line number option available as part of status bar for this purpose.

Word 2007, Word 2010 and Word 2013

Microsoft Word 2007 and Word 2010 provides option to display the line numbers in a word document. This would be a useful feature when you want to restrict your content based on the number of lines written in the document. If the status bar does not show the line numbers, then right click on the Status bar and select Line number.

After selecting Line Number option in the Customize Status Bar context menu, the status bar would display the line number as shown below.

Word 2011 for Mac

Word 2011 for Mac does not support the display of line number in status bar. This option is available in Window’s version of Microsoft Word but not in Mac OS X.

Different page size in the same document in Word 2013 & Word 2010

This post is in reply to a query posted by a blog reader that

Is it possible to set a different page size, for one page, within a document of another page size. I have a multipage document in A4, I want to insert an A3 page size in the middle in landscape orientation, so I can fit a drawing onto the page.

Word 2013 & Word 2010 allows users to have different page size in the same document using Section. We had already seen how to use Section break for removing page number from selected pages. And now to have A4 and A3 page size, follow the below mentioned steps.

Step 1: Open the Word document for editing.

Step 2 : Navigate to the page below which you want to insert A3 page.

Step 3: Select Page Layout from the menu then click the Breaks option under Page Setup.

Step 4: From the drop down, select Next Page under Section Breaks.

Step 5: After the new page has been inserted, click the Size option under Page Setup and select A3 from the list of available page sizes.

By this way Word 2013 and Word 2010 users can have different page sizes in the same document.

How to change the Page Size in Word 2010 and Word 2013

Page Layout menu option in Word 2013 and Word 2010 provides users with option for changing the page size. In case if you want to change the page size from the standard A4 size to A3 then you can use this feature.

From the Home menu, navigate to Page Layout menu.

In the Page Layout menu, navigate to Page Setup section.

To change the Page Size for the Word document, click the drop down arrow below the Size menu option and select your preferred size for the Word document.

If you want to change the page size only during the printing of the document, then you can use the Print option for this purpose.

Click the File menu and then the Print menu. Then navigate to the Settings section on the right hand side.

How to hide header/footer while typing in Excel 2010

This is in response to question asked by a reader of this blog related with header and footer in Excel 2010.

how do I make the header / footer not visible on the page while typing?

When you click on the insert header and footer option in Excel 2010, excel would immediately change the view to Page Layout. Hence you would see the newly added header and footer in your worksheet.

After typing the required header and footer details and do not want to see header and footer while typing you excel sheet in the data section then you can change the view to Normal by selecting Normal under the Workbook Views section.

This would temporarily hide the inserted header and footer in the Worksheet and you can always get it back by changing the Workbook view to Page Layout.
